Week 5 so far has been my favorite week of the course. This is because I love love and I really enjoy reading romance novels, so these letters were the most interesting thing for me to be reading. My favorite part of the week most definitely was reading the intro to Dear Bessie. This is because my favorite type of romance books are the friends to lovers trope. It is so exciting and heartwarming to see people who have already built such a strong bond with each other fall in love. As well as I like being able to hear more about the people writing the letters, Chris Barker and Bessie Moore. I can tell that the purpose of this writing was to entertain, inform, and make the readers feel the emotions of the writers while also keeping the educational information included in the writing. Out of all of the introduction the part that stuck with me the most was, “Bessie’s reply, which took her several weeks to compose and almost two months to arrive, would change their lives forever” (Garfield 2). The reason this stuck with me was because I was able to relate this to my own life. Nowadays with technology messages can be sent back and forth in a matter of seconds. Personally, I could not imagine waiting months for a response from someone I truly care about. Especially, in a time like this when you do not know where your last day is going to be.This article did make me question if the stress of Chris fighting in the war is what made Bessie tell him how she truly feels because he could be gone any day. Therefore, reading that sentence struck me in the heart in a way that I was not used to when reading things about WW2. In all honesty, this entire introduction tugged on my heart strings in a way I never expected it to, which is why out of all the things we have done, Dear Bessie has to be my absolute favorite so far.
