Since I entered high school I knew I wanted to be an Early Childhood Educator, specifically I want to teach Kindergarten. Having known what I wanted to pursue for a long time, I did a lot of career assignments on the job of an elementary teacher. However, there is always room to learn more, which is exactly what I did when looking into the “What Can I Do With This Major” area on the career center website. I spent most of my time looking into the different areas of skill that elementary educators needed to have. These included things like having a minor psychology background, specifically child psychology. As well as being well-versed in arithmetic, algebra, geometry, calculus, and statistics. Deep down I knew these were prevalent in children’s education somehow, but I was not expecting all the “advanced” types of math to be necessary. However, upon doing more searching, I realized that understanding the advanced versions of what topics you are teaching makes the easy stuff even easier to explain in several ways. As for the industry, I learned that the level of education needed can differ from state to state. For example, because I am getting my teaching certificate in PA, I can really only teach in PA, unless I get my bachelor’s degree or test for other states. Though if someone has a master’s degree in teaching they are more likely to be able to teach outside of the state they were given the degree from. All in all, looking further into Elementary Education made me more interested in the career and gave me a clearer idea of my future plans to further my education in this

Lehighton Area School District

Lehighton, PA, 18235
Dear Mrs. Karpowicz,
Lehighton Area School District, better known as my stomping grounds, has shaped me into the person I am today. The morals of, “Partnering with students, families, and community to provide opportunities for life-long success through academic excellence and individual growth in a safe and supportive environment.” and the ideology of Lehighton’s TRIBE PRIDE have been instilled in me since 2010 when I began my journey with the school.
Upon graduating in 2023 I chose to attend Muhlenberg College in Allentown to continue working hard and playing hard each day to obtain my theater and elementary education degree in 2027. While I am pursuing this educational endeavor I am also beginning work as the choreographer for Lehighton High School’s Drama Club. This was a simple transition due to the fact I spent my time in the school participating heavily in the music department and other school organizations deepening my love of the District. These things included choir, show choir, choreographing for music groups, drama club, cheer, NHS, and so much more. Each of these things gave me more insight on how employees of the district operate and how to bring across the goals the school sets for its students in the classroom, on the stage, or on the field.
Over the past 18 years of my life, I have been communicating well, working hard with, and building relationships with people in the Lehighton community. Whether that be students, passers-by, or even fellow educators. I have used the skills obtained by the Lehighton community I grew up in to make me a successful leader and educator. Seeing the open position on the Handshake app, that Muhlenberg College uses for employment, I immediately felt drawn to the position and did my best to make sure I am a good fit for the Elementary teacher position. With my love of the school and what I do in the school, I can assure you that every day will be given 100% the Lehighton way.
Sincerely,
Sophia Wentz
